I am one of those people who feels very much at home in NYC and feels a slight pinch of bitterness lounging in the taxi back to LaGuardia on my way home, plotting my next visit before finishing the last. Thing is though, I must be honest and admit that I really don’t fully get NYC. I am far too Manhattan-centric. Next visit, for certain, I am going to vote myself off the island for a visit to Brooklyn. Home of counter-culture, anti-corporate, avant-garde, hand-made, fair-trade, in-season, Eco-friendly, locally-sourced and price-pointed for the 99%, Brooklyn is first amongst the Outer Burroughs for sheer art, affordability and attitude.
Seeing as I practically live for affordable, artful sheers with attitude you might imagine my delight at getting introduced to a newish and very exciting online hosiery haven, Peek Brooklyn. Peek is the brain-child and love-child of founder Cristina Casciano-King, a woman who came to her passion for leg fashion the same way as many of us, one pair at a time. As a former stylist and cosmetician once consigned to a black uniform day in, day out, she dressed her legs better than the other girls to stand out from the crowd. 400 or so pairs later, she felt ready to stand up a business with a clear and ambitious mission: bringing the finest hosiery the world has to offer. Peek Brooklyn is determined to bring this vision to people with a little Brooklyn attitude, wherever they are.
I love the name. Peek. Cheeky isn’t it? To me it conveys top, premium, ultra and also conveys the harmless, flirty sneaky-peek of leg that I enjoy showing here and there. The website is clean, the color palette and font styles manage to be funky, current and readable all at the same time, navigation is a snap and the product descriptions are zesty, fun and on-point. All of this helps the Peek Brooklyn brand essence rise above the very strong range of brands that Cristina and team have scoured fashionable precincts of the world for.
Peek Brooklyn carries ranges from personal faves, Gerbe, Phillipe Matignon, and Trasparenze to name just a few, and hand picks the most fresh, seasonal and current offerings from these vendors and a select handful of other fashion leaders. Peek does not show the broadest selection of hosiery you will see within a mouse-click or three. What Peek does do is harvest a very thoughtfully put-together, a complete and current leg wardrobe presented with a curated collection quality. Efficient as Haiku, just way, way prettier.
All of which makes shopping-mad, interactive-media geek-girl Petra delirious, but what about the product? What about my legs?? Let us then take a close look at a terrific offering from the hosiery line of clever intimate innovators, Her Look, the super-current big-dot entry from Commando, the “Connectthe Polka Dots Tights”.
Commando is a brand I have been meaning to test for a long time. Let me now make up for tragically lost time. Super cool, with a very real emphasis on cool. The Commando sorcery is shrouded by loads of patents, secrets, lawyers and what-not. If I was all sciency and clever I might hazard a guess on what the magic ingredient is, but rendered in words it would all sound kind of blah, blahblah. I will therefore simply go to feel and look.
The laser-cut top is whistle clean and super smooth. The fabric doesn’t just wick, it Hoovers heat and moisture out and far away. The gusset is expertly cut and sensitively finished to the extent that (as the name implies ladies) you can comfortably, fashionably and freely go, well, commando. If you have a party frock that needs perfectly clean surfaces beneath, Commando is up for the rescue mission.
Since my first big-dot tights review here, I have warmed up to the Big Dot Look considerably. And with all love and respect due to Pamela Mann, our friends at Commando have simply done a better, more grown up, quality-minded job on their entry. Genuinely premium fabrication, 11% Spandex, 10 denier super-sheer, half boarded, and neatly sandal footed for a long day to big night effective look. The woven dots maintain shape well above the knee and have a luxe flocked velvet hand feel.
All of this shows in the price ($32.00) but does not quite press them into the premium price league. The Commandos are clearly built to last. I expect with care and a little good fortune to get them down to about $3.00 / wear. My Pamela Mann’s won’t last that well.
Big Dotsare a big statement though, so be sure to check with friends before hitting a nightclub or a festive party in great numbers. One woman in big dots is spectacular. Two is a spectacle. Call dot-dibs first, and then rock them proudly.
