Oklahoma has ushered in a pair of spectacular designers for lingerie. Zinke, a young-minded, fashion-forward label of intimates and loungewear, is the creation of sisters Arin Robinson and Jessie Zinke. The two decided to launch into lingerie design with a FFWD Showroom in California and exhibition with CurveExpo. Zinke’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection, Electric Girl, is the first collection to reflect Arin and Jessie’s collaborative approach to fashion expression: versatile and uniquely sexy.

The collaboration has fused Arin’s innate understanding of design and business experience with Jessie’s extraordinary sense of style and creative abilities. Espalore and Angela Friedman

Angela Friedman is a corsetress. Her works have been extensively underscored with satins, silks, boning and trims. Theatre is her current ‘lacing ground’ under which she studies the details for the corsets and panties of Espalore. A Costume Technician presently for the New York City Ballet, Angela is creating a name for herself nearly three years running. Espalore, her current label, has a corset for every luxury in our wildest dreams. There is an elegance of nostalgia from the Jasmine Panties which lures any insatiable, satin enthusiast. Most of Angela Friedman’s work is in corsetry, burlesque costume, theatrical costume and dance costume, historical reproductions, and tailoring. I believe we will be hearing and seeing her work in the future of parisian underthings. The Espalore shop is currently taking custom orders on a part-time basis while she prepares with The Nutcracker.

Lingering Lingerie from Vintage Vixens

I have been moving the studio over the course of two weeks, and the transport of this move has had me contemplating this next article on lingerie. The vintage pieces uncovered during my task of packing was phenomenal. I have a deep appreciation for the designers whom reclaim, and repurpose, vintage lingerie. The first name which comes to mind is Boudoir Queen. Dawn Younger-Smith has been reconstructing vintage pieces for the eccentric and flavorful peoples on this planet. The website is filled with grandeur and luxury. Another creator and fascinating, vintage vixen is Kathryn Wilson of Junkhouse Dollyard. The most recent collection has corsets and panties which spin the idea of imagination, into our underthings. Ruby Pearl and Muir Hughes are two other designers using authentic, reclaimed undergarments as the basics of their collections. My eyes are opened to the burlesque and costume designers pushing forward the movement to ‘shake what your mother gave you’. There is no replacement for the quality fashioned into undergarments of the past. Their sturdy construction and dainty materials challenge the re-designing of each piece. These designs then become works of wearable art.

Handkerchiefs and Bloomers

The history of the modern brassiere and underwear traces back to a pair of handkerchiefs with ribbons and the underthings, considered ‘bloomers’, necessary for athletic ventures. Women had worn similar undergarments many years before these inventions, although the successful marketing and patents began to take hold with manufacturers, designers, and advertising.

Camisoles and drawers were also in the market which had a virtuous following by ladies which wanted to ‘free’ themselves from the one-piece. At this time, fashion played a backseat to durability, comfort, and function. Then, comfort opportunities saw a rise with new fabrics and dancing trends towards the mid-nineteen twenties. As the bloomers became shorter and our feminine underthings were well underway towards art and fashion, this brief history remains important to the vast expression in the many unlimited designs we have present-day.
