Disclaimer: This is not a ‘MythBusters’ experiment, but it would be fun to try one someday.
I’ve come to the conclusion that we live in a world of stereotypes. It is easier to just put a label if anyone else does it, especially if it is sustained by an influential person or a popular magazine. But there are people who love discovering things on their own, and I consider myself such a person. If you read this post, I am sure you are too.
This post idea came to me a few weeks ago, after having a very interesting conversation with some good friends. They have great taste in fashion, but they (used to) buy lingerie based on some myths they’ve read somewhere. In the end everyone went home learning something new 🙂 It was fun to talk about it, and I am sure it will be fun for you to read this post too. So here it goes.
Myth 1. Luxury Lingerie is Always Expensive
OK, no argue here. Luxury Lingerie can be expensive. Brands like Agent Provocateur, La Perla, Wolford, Fleur of England and many other luxury lingerie brands I personally adore can be a little too pricey for the average income. Each of these brands have their unique reasons for setting their prices so high (this is another topic I will talk about soon).
BUT, and this is a big but, LUXURY LINGERIE IS NOT ALWAYS EXPENSIVE.
Let’s say you have a $100 budget to spend on lingerie. I guarantee you can buy at least one set (if not 2) of exquisite luxury lingerie, if you follow the right lingerie promotions. Such sets would look good on you even after 2 years of intensive wear (of course, if you take good care of your underwear).
In the last 3 years, we’ve discovered over 150 lingerie brands that offer quality, luxury lingerie in different price ranges, even if you do not purchase them in sale. And this list keeps growing.
Before I go to the next myth, let’s rewind for a short minute to my get-together. One of my friends told me he considered buying luxury lingerie a way of highlighting your own social status, same as it would be if you bought a Louis Vitton purse, a shamelessly expensive accessory, just to show off. If I were to buy such brands, I would just be a ‘material girl’, a conceited person who wants to brag about herself. This was his argument to why all luxury lingerie is expensive.
(Un)fortunately, I do not dispose of so much money that I need to show it off through my clothes, accessories, shoes or lingerie. And even if I did have a big fat bank account, I am sure I would still spend it rationally and would buy my lingerie within a certain budget, same as I do now.
From my own perspective, luxury lingerie is about impeccable quality. It is uniquely designed, made of high-end fabrics, and sometimes finished with delicate hand made embroideries. It has perfect cuts, it’s extremely comfortable, but also trendsetting and daring, always elegant and feminine. Our skin is the most sensitive organ in our body and it deserves to be treated with the highest attention.
Myth 2. You Can Not Find Luxury Lingerie for Plus Size
I recently watched Charlet’s great video made at this year’s first Full Figured Fashion Show in New York. At a certain moment in her video she highlights that you can rarely find designers’ clothes for sizes over 12. This is another misconception that the fashion world finds it right to promote. I personally disagree completely with the skinny women interviewed by Charlet, and who find unappealing the idea of offering Haute Couture for plus size. I am 100% sure that soon we will see a big change in this direction. The wheel is already set in motion and it can’t be stopped.
When it comes to lingerie, I have great news for curvy ladies. Not only that there are amazing plus size lingerie brands out there, but the bespoke lingerie designers are ready, at any moment, to create the perfect set for your curves (can be corsets, bras, panties, or anything your heart desires).
We will have a new section for Bespoke Lingerie Designers soon so you can meet them in person and be dazzled by their magical craftsmanship. Until then, if you need help, leave a comment and you will get at least one bespoke lingerie designer recommendation from us.
Myth 3. Boudoir Lingerie Must be Worn Only for the Partner’s Pleasure
This is a myth that most magazines put on their covers to sell their copies. But sadly, it is a myth that some women (and men) believe in too. I have at least one friend who would not wear boudoir lingerie unless it is for a certain special partner.
Fortunately, it is easy to change these habits and you should wear boudoir lingerie for YOUR OWN pleasure also. I propose you a different scenario.
Take one Sunday off, just for yourself. Choose your favorite boudoir outfit, which I am sure it includes at least one sensual slip , a teddy or a camisole, and a satin robe. Make yourself just a little pretty. Enjoy the powerful feeling of femininity and seduction such outfits have a tendency to reveal from hidden corners of your personality. Then start doing things you love, like listen to your favorite music, dance, read a book, have a phone conversation with someone you love, watch your favorite movie, eat chocolate and the list goes on and on.
The important thing is to have fun, relax and enjoy. Boudoir Lingerie can do all things for you with, or without a partner next to you.
Myth 4. Maternity Lingerie Is Always Dull
This may have been true a few centuries back, but the maternity lingerie brands I know today are not dull at all. I can not be an expert on this topic as I haven’t yet been a mother. But, I do have friends who are now pregnant or already have a borned child.
I noticed that throughout the pregnancy, and a little more after the baby is borned, these women (no matter their age) tend to put their needs last. Lingerie is enough to be comfortable, and nothing more. And it is the last thing they have on their mind.
But I did make a test. I offered my best friend a maternity set lingerie for her and she loved it. Beautiful lingerie can not be refused (ever), nor worn without feeling a little better about yourself when you look in the mirror (no matter how changed your body is). Try it!
And it is not true at all. Through my work for Guilty Pleasures I’ve met extraordinary men with flawless taste in lingerie, and fashion.
I know men who have been willing to discover more about the lingerie world just because they love offering lingerie to their dear ones, when they know that such surprises make us so happy.
I know that there are inspired lingerie designers (see Yes Master, just one example), who understand women too well.
I know for sure that at least one friend who believes this myth is true will be pleasantly surprised by her partner this Christmas.
My dear friends, don’t believe in myths or stereotypes until you test them yourself. The lingerie world is full of pleasant surprises, as you will continue to discover if you follow Guilty-Pleasures.org, the blog about Lingerie we all covet.
